All-female nominee list for Best Actress is a sign of progress, claim the Oscars
While there was only one female nominee for Best Director, and just three female nominees across both the Best Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay categories, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has hailed the all-female nominee list for the Best Actress Oscar as a big step towards gender equality in Hollywood.
The Academy pointed to the amount of female talent being recognised in the Best Actress category as evidence Hollywood was learning its lesson.
A spokesman for the Academy commented, “People have this perception that Hollywood is a man’s world – but there isn’t a single male nomination in the Best Actress category, so you can see the progress that’s been made. And of course when you look at the girly categories like make-up and costumes, there’s always a few women nominated in those too.”
